Tax & SARSAssessment and penalty challenged on objection
Situation. An owner-managed business received an additional assessment and an understatement penalty after a SARS verification.
What we did. We reconstructed the supporting records, set out the grounds against the Tax Administration Act and SARS practice, and lodged an objection with a section 164 suspension of payment.
Outcome. The objection was upheld and the understatement penalty materially reduced, with the client’s right to dispute protected throughout.
SARS debt reliefA substantial SARS debt compromised
Situation. An established Cape Town business had built up a substantial SARS debt across several tax types over a number of years. The debt blocked its tax clearance and shut it out of tenders it needed to grow.
What we did. We prepared a compromise of tax debt application under Part D of Chapter 14 of the Tax Administration Act 28 of 2011, supported by a full statement of the taxpayer’s financial position and a realistic settlement offer.
Outcome. SARS accepted a settlement of a fraction of the amount owed, in full and final settlement. With the debt resolved the client obtained its tax clearance after years of struggle and could tender for work again.
Business advisoryTender financials delivered on deadline
Situation. A client pursuing a significant tender needed compliant financial statements and supporting compliance documents at short notice.
What we did. We compiled the required financials, confirmed tax and CIPC compliance, and assembled the financial section of the tender pack to specification.
Outcome. The client submitted a complete, compliant tender within the deadline, with every financial and compliance requirement met.
Internal auditSupply chain controls reviewed for an audit committee
Situation. A public-sector entity needed an independent review of its Supply Chain Management function ahead of its Audit and Risk Committee meeting.
What we did. We performed an SCM internal audit against the applicable prescripts, tested key controls and procurement processes, and set out our findings with practical, value-adding recommendations.
Outcome. The entity received a clear set of findings and corrective actions to take to its Audit and Risk Committee, strengthening procurement compliance and governance.
Accounting & systemsA four-company group converted to Sage
Situation. A group of four operating companies needed to move its entire accounting function from QuickBooks to Sage Business Cloud Accounting, without losing history or breaking group reporting.
What we did. We planned and ran the conversion across all four entities, migrating ledgers and opening balances, rebuilding the chart of accounts, reconciling intercompany balances, and verifying every account from the old system to the new against an audit standard, tracked on a group go-live dashboard through to sign-off.
Outcome. All four companies went live on Sage with clean, reconciled, audit-ready numbers and consistent group-wide reporting.
TurnaroundCash flow stabilised and costs brought under control
Situation. An owner-managed business under financial pressure needed to stabilise its cash flow and rein in costs to stay viable.
What we did. We carried out a cash flow and working-capital review and a cost and overhead reduction exercise, put practical controls and standard operating procedures in place, and tracked the turnaround through to sign-off.
Outcome. Cash flow and working capital were stabilised, overheads reduced, and the business placed on a sounder footing with the disciplines to sustain it.
